No translations into sign language possible

One of our goals for queerfeMS 2017 was to offer as many lectures and workshops in sign language. Unfortunately we underestimated the difficulties and costs that are involved in finding professionals who could translate into sign language and have to confess that it will not be possible this year. It is a very disappointing result for us but we miscalculated the efforts needed to organize translators and most of the financial requests have still not been granted until now.

All together, we could not offer translations into sign language in the way we had wished for, and therefore we have decided not to continue with our plans. We can assure you that we have learned from our mistakes and we will use this experience for other events to fulfill this important goal in the future.

We apologize for all the possible exclusions we might cause this time on the queerfeMS 2017. If you have any comments, critics, experiences or suggestions, we would be very thankful for your thoughts!

Registration of sleeping places and bike rentals

People from all around the area will travel to Münster for the upcoming events and we are expecting approx. 50 participants who will need a nice place to stay. So if you have any free space it would be great if you could let us know as soon as possible.

We kindly ask you to fill out the following questions. This information will make it easier for us to find suitable accommodations for all participants, taking personal wishes and needs into account.

If you do not have any empty rooms or beds for others but a bike standing around in your garage, we would appreciate your contribution. It would make it much easier for visitors to move around the city and we would be happy to organize a small bike rental for the weekend. Maybe you can help us!

You can bring the bikes to „Baracke“ on the 14th between 5 and 7 o’clock p.m. or on the 15th from 10 o’clock a.m. on.

Save the date

From September 15 to 17, “queerfeMS” takes place in Münster! It will be a weekend of lectures, workshops, learning from each other, DIY, music, time for networking and empowerment and delicious food. We would like to create and respect spaces, in which people can be empowered. At the same time the queerfeMS program is a critique on hierachical and discriminatory structures in society and within (queer-)feminisms. We want to learn from and with each other, and connect our struggles in solidarity!

Among other things, there will be a lecture on the topic “Intersectionality – focussing on chronic illness & dis_ability“ by Dan Khanh Duyen Tran, a lecture by Lana Sirri: „What is islamic and what is feminist about islamic feminisms?”, lectures on “Psychiatry Criticism” by Malaika Bunzenthal and about transhostile attitudes in feminisms.

Workshops on “Classism” by Fred_e, on prison criticism, drawing, repairing bikes, singing and music workshops. A lecture on Jewish (Queer_) Feminism by Debora Antmann, a Spoken Word Performance by Lahya (Stefanie- Lahya Aukongo), a reading from the book “In Our Own Words – Refugee Women in Germany tell their stories” by the International Women Space…

…and much more!

The building is wheelchair accessible and there are barrier-free toilets. The food will be vegan and there will always be a gluten-free option. We also want to organize a Kids Space. Queerfeminist Summer Camp 2017 – orga team is looking for support!

This year, we want to organise the second Queerfeminist Summer Camp in Münster and we need support for our team. Last year, the first camp took place in Coerde, surrounded by nature. There were music, workshops, lectures and talking rounds. We were supplied with tasty (vegan) food by a cooking collective. People were camping and in the evenings, we sat at the fire, telling stories and playing the guitar. The camp should be a place for networking, for learning from each other and for encouragement and we got a lot of positive feedback.

But there was also some criticism. Some people told us that some perspectives were not (enough) included. We got the feedback that the program was very white. Trans people criticized that some needs were not taken into account and that trans people were made invisible in some lectures and workshops when the speakers talked about „men“ and „women“ only. The camp area and the toilets were not (easily) accessible for wheelchairs. Lectures and workshops haven’t been translated into sign language.

This year, we want to try it again and learn from the criticism and the helpful ideas! We want to plan a camp that includes more perspectives, is more accessible and that is a place where many different people can feel good the way they are!

But for that, we need your help!
Because at the moment, we are a quite small orga group and think (without rejecting the criticism mentioned above) that we need to be more people to improve things! We’re looking forward to new ideas and proposals! We don’t have a fixed plan, but want to come together and think about: Where and when? How long? Which subjects and issues do we want to deal with, what’s important to us? And so on…

The orga meetings should be an empowering place of networking especially for people defining themselves as genderqueer, trans, inter, non-binary and/or female. An attentive and appreciating behaviour towards each other is important to us.

But who are „we“ actually? Momentaneously, we are 6 white persons who are not being handicapped, are mostly studied and between 25 and 33 years old. We try to reflect on our privileges and learn more about it. We would be happy to have more perspectives and backgrounds in our group!

If you’d like to deal with queer/feminist issues and organise an event lasting several days according to your wishes and ideas, then feel invited to our public planning meeting: Wednesday, May 3rd at 6 pm at the neben*an (Warendorfer Str. 45-47, 48145 Münster).
